Armenia - Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi meet in Yerevan, March 25, 2025.

Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan discussed with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi bilateral relations and the aftermath of Iran’s war with Israel in a phone call on Tuesday.

“During the phone call, the two sides exchanged views on bilateral ties, the latest developments in the regions and issues of mutual interest after the Israeli and U.S. aggressions against Iranian territory,” the Mehr news agency reported, citing the official Iranian readout of the call.

It said Araghchi praised the Armenian government’s position on the 12-day conflict and “consular” assistance to Iranians who fled to Armenia during the Israeli air strikes. For his part, Mirzoyan “again condemned the U.S.-Israeli aggression,” according to the official IRNA news agency.

The Armenian Foreign Minister cited Mirzoyan as expressing “hope that the established ceasefire will be lasting and will provide a real opportunity for negotiations.” The two ministers also discussed Armenian-Iranian cooperation in “multilateral platforms” and “crisis situations,” the ministry said in a statement. It did not give other details.

Mirzoyan telephoned Araghchi on June 14 one day after the start of the Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and military sites condemned by Armenia. Yerevan did not urge Armenian nationals to leave Iran in the following days. It also kept the Armenian-Iranian border open, enabling thousands of Iranians to take refuge in Armenia.

Many in Armenia feared during the conflict that a possible weakening or destabilization of Iran could embolden Azerbaijan to invade Armenia in an attempt to open the corridor to its Nakhichevan exclave through Syunik, the only Armenian region bordering the Islamic Republic.

Iranian leaders had repeatedly warned that attempts to strip Iran of its common border with Armenia are a “red line” for them. The Iranian ambassador in Yerevan, Mehdi Sobhani, insisted on June 17 that Tehran’s position on the geopolitical issue remains unchanged.

“We have proven that we will never deviate from our red lines,” Sobhani told a news conference.

He said on Friday that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will visit Armenia this summer.
